Shane’s story demonstrates how self-worth and Microsoft technology skill mastery leads to income and college successes! Shane was referred to Sierra Group Academy by Philadelphia OVR in 2022. Since then, he has gained part time work as an audio-visual assistant, completed 3+ years of college, and been a guest presenter at Trinity Memorial Church. As a future professional advocate/lay pastor, he has already published an op-ed with the National LGBTQ Task Force.

Shane’s journey began when entering Sierra Group Academy with low expectations of himself, having initially dropped out of college in 2018, due in large part to disabilities, which include mental health differences and chronic disorders. During this “break” from academia Shane worked in food/retail customer service and struggled with housing insecurity. Wanting more from life, in the fall of 2022, he approached PA OVR.

Having graduated from Sierra Group Academy, Shane emerged from his prior self to make career connections across the country. Shane displays a “found” capacity for resilience with a tremendous ability to balance work, school, and personal struggles.

Sierra Group’s program rounded out business communication confidence that provided newfound confidence and career insights. As such, when Shane graduated from our program in May 2023, he walked away with something even greater in value than his Certificate, he had a newfound sense of self-worth. His excellent grades, passion for learning and service work have Shane primed to reach his next vocational goals upon gaining his degree in Philosophy.

Asked what he would want others to know, Shane states:

“I think the biggest thing I can tell people is don’t put all your self-worth in your capacity to get a job. Pursue your strengths, reach out to OVR for help, and ultimately, the right employment will come your way.”
